Two drawings. That's the entire mechanism, and it's the reason a device can substitute for a walk.

Your Calf Is Supposed to Be a Second Heart. Mine Had Been Off Duty for Years.

Now here's the arithmetic that stopped me cold.

That pump only fires when the muscle contracts. Walking contracts it. Standing still does not — which is why nurses and retail workers and hairdressers swell up just as badly as desk workers do, and why "but I'm on my feet all day" isn't the defence people think it is. Standing is not contracting. It's loading.

Two of those lines deserve a second look.
